China Say No to Plastic Bags

China Is Banning Plastic Bags!

China is the world’s largest country in regards to both population and technology. Although the country is so developed, it is difficult to handle the pollution caused by plastic bags. China is one of the biggest users of plastic bags, and because of the side effects, they have planned to ban plastic bags and start the campaign say no to plastic bags by the end of 2020 in major cities of the country.

The country has been struggling a lot in recent years because of the garbage produced by its 1.4 billion citizens. In 2010, it was reported that china collected 60 million tons of plastic waste from households. According to the latest reports, plastic bags with a thickness of less than 0.025 will be banned in 2022.

Ma Jun, the director and the founder of the public and environmental affairs, a non-governmental organization in Beijing, said:

“We all know that this pollution can lead to an impact on the health of the ecosystem and on the animals and biodiversity and also, eventually, on public health, as well. I think we understand that there is a cost be paid.”

The government is trying to manufacture biodegradable plastic bags, but it is not a perfect solution. Also, these bags require certain conditions to decompose and a lot of lands to dump.

Why do plastic bags need to be banned?

China Is Banning Plastic Bags!

No degradable plastic bags make it difficult to keep the environment clean and healthy. They don’t decompose themselves and need to be recycled to get rid of them, which is a case that needs so much attention and technology. Recycling these plastic bags also cause serious effects on the environment and increase the risk of global warming.

China is a well-developed country with a planned future. But still, the country failed to estimate the waste produced by these plastic bags. The largest garbage dump site in china has been filled before the scheduled time; it was supposed to be filled after 25 years from now. It is an alarming situation because, at this rate, the public will soon be suffering from a lot of health and environmental issues.

Some of the side effects of plastic bags are discussed below:

  • The most concerning thing about these plastic bags is that they take many years to decompose and produce toxins in the soil.
  • If they are burned, they produce air pollution in the form of toxic gases and smoke.
  • They require a lot of lands to dump and produce methane and carbon dioxide, which have a disastrous effect on human health.
  • They don’t only produce harmful effects on human health but also on the animal’s health. Animals consume them and suffer choking, infection, and mortality.
  • Water pollution due to these plastic bags is a major threat to marine and freshwater life.
  • If these plastic bags are not properly discarded, they can disrupt our daily lives by blocking the sewage system.

Positive impact on the environment

China Is Banning Plastic Bags!

To save both energy and the environment, China has taken a very good step to ban plastic bags because of their single-use. The government has decided to ban straws and single-use plastic bags in restaurants by 30%. And the plan has been made to cope with this white pollution in the next five years.

The government has ordered the markets and the restaurants to provide plastic bags and straws only to those people who are disabled and need them. The shop keepers are ordered to charge for the bags to encourage people to bring their shopping bags. These efforts will bring a positive change to China’s environment. And there will be a decrease in the chances of air, water, and land pollution.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Chinese government has taken a good decision to ban plastic bags in major cities and later in the whole country in the next five years. Because it will produce a good effect on the overall health and environment of the country.
